4th Grade & 5th Grade Art Class
Hosted by Outschool and Jerry Joe Seltzer:
In this ongoing class, students are taught one art topic each week. They learn how to apply this knowledge and how masters have applied it throughout art history. Each week a project is begun during class and then finished later when the learners find time to work on it. With the understanding that student schedules can be unpredictable, lessons and projects are designed to be self-contained. Students can join in at any time and immediately feel welcome and involved. Projects do not extend beyond the week in which they are presented. Materials required are common and usually present in a typical home. A list of materials is given a week in advance of each class to avoid surprises. The following 4th and 5th grade art topics are covered during the year along with many more: Portrait vs. Landscape and the Golden Ratio • Point, Line, Shape, Form (1d,2d,3d) • Symmetry in subjects and composition • Subject(s) vs secondary subjects • Human body proportions and poses • Positive and negative shapes • Thumbnail sketches, studies in composition and color • Drawing contours and cross-contours • Drawing shadows, shadow grouping • Still life • Drawing human faces • Drawing animals • Methods of shading • Gradient • Types of shadows • Texture • Rhythm, balance, pattern • Landscape, foreground, mid-ground, background • Drawing natural subjects (clouds, trees, mountains, etc.) • Picture plane, visual field • Horizon, overlapping • Value, drawing pencils • Color theory and terms, temperature, saturation, hue, complementary, tints/shades, analogous, etc. • Cropping • Photography, black and white • Photography, color • Video • Animation, flip book • Stop motion animation • Holiday and seasonal projects • Organic vs. Geometric • Natural vs. Manmade • Art materials : papers, media, paints, historical, modern • Realism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Pop Art, etc., Folding paper, Origami
