Taught by Cheryl Taylor of Taylor Made Science
Meets Wednesdays from Aug 25 to May 11 (see calendar on website below for holidays)
11:00am-12:30pm Pacific; noon-1:30pm Mountain; 1:00-2:30pm Central; 2:00-3:30pm Eastern
Prerequisites: successful completion of high school level Algebra I and high school Geometry
Recommended for: all science majors as fulfillment of the Physics requirement for college admissions (Students should take either Honors Physics or AP Physics 1, not both)
Course description: AP Physics 1 is an algebra-based, introductory college-level physics course. Topics covered include: kinematics, dynamics, circular motion and gravity, energy, momentum, simple harmonic motion, torque and rotational motion, electrical charge and electrical force, DC circuits, and mechanical waves and sound. Although similar to the Honors Physics course, AP Physics 1 is equivalent to a first semester college Physics course, with a heavier math component. The course will also focus on preparing students for the College Board AP Physics 1 Exam which, depending on score, can provide one semester of college credit in Physics.
Supplies needed: The supply/registration fee covers the cost of a lab kit that will be used to complete the 15 AP labs included in the course. These lab kits will be mailed over the summer. A few additional household supplies will be needed, as well as a scientific calculator. Written materials, including prep materials for the AP Exam, will be provided online and will need to be printed. A textbook will be needed for the course. A used copy can usually be purchased fairly cheaply online from places like Amazon and Textbooks.com.
