AP® Statistics Class through Blue Tent | 2021-22

In this live online or self-paced AP Statistics class, homeschooled high schoolers work through daily lessons with short, teacher-recorded video instruction, guided notes, and practice problems. Students are free to complete the lessons and assignments at their own pace within each week, but the course is structured to encourage daily learning and practice.

  • In the live class, students will meet with their instructor and classmates for 90 minutes every other Friday on ZOOM in an active and engaging problem session. Live sessions will consist of examples offered by the instructor, small-group collaboration, and plenty of time to ask questions.

  • In the self-paced class, students will cover the same material as the live class, but all instruction will be delivered by teacher-produced videos.

  • In addition to the live weekly classes, the instructor is available to live or self-paced students throughout each week in two live, regularly scheduled study halls that will span two hours each.
    • Students are welcome to drop in to study halls for quick questions or to stay logged in with their microphone’s muted–working on their classwork and asking the instructor for on-the-spot assistance if and when questions arise.

The Weekly Schedule

AP Statistics will include recorded teaching videos, live Friday problem sessions where the instructor will offer instruction and students will collaborate–working through given and raised questions–and “Test Prep Tuesdays,” where students will review and practice with a variety of tools.

During a typical week, students might see some of the following:

  • Activities covering specific learning topics that are both aligned with sections of the book, and designed to cover AP exam standards

  • Short instructional videos demonstrating the use of statistics in the real world

  • Supplemental lecture videos to help formalize ideas that are being discovered through the activities

  • Homework problems that build on concepts students learn in assigned activities

  • Checkpoint quizzes to test understanding of terms and concepts

  • Chapter tests, cumulative midterms, and a cumulative final. These are designed to mimic the AP exam to give students thorough practice with the AP framework.

  • Previous AP exam multiple choice and free response questions to aid in test-taking skills

  • Forums (in the live class) where students discuss concepts in-depth to expand their understanding of the “what” and “why” of what is being learned

The instructor utilizes the pedagogy and resources from the creators of StatsMedic, which are designed to engage and challenge students to develop a deeper understanding of statistics. Learn more about this in the instructor’s course demo.

Core Resources

Students will be using the 4th edition of The Practice of Statistics, one of the most widely used high school statistics textbooks. It is well known for explaining concepts in a clear manner and for helping students to grasp statistical concepts.

  • The class will use Barron’s AP Statistics, the leading test preparation book for AP Stats, which is packed full of subject review, multiple choice practice, and free response questions with explained answers.

  • Students will also utilize AP Classroom–new resource developed by the College Board–to monitor their progress throughout the year as they practice with multiple choice and free response questions.

  • A hard-copy text can be borrowed free through the Blue Tent OnLoan program.

Ashley Porter, the instructor, has a particular passion for statistics, and she hopes students will join her in this highly useful class that she believes will be relevant and interesting no matter where student interests lie in high school, college, and beyond!
