Basic American Sign Language 101 for Elementary School Students – Grades 2 – 5
Do you have a student interested in learning a language that they can speak with their hands? Basic American Sign Language 101 is a class geared towards elementary-aged students, with a focus on vocabulary. Other aspects that will be taught include basic rules of ASL, conversational signs, and a simple understanding of Deaf history and culture.
Each week a new category of words will be taught. There will be games and activities to reinforce signs learned and the context in which they are used, practice signing skills, and overall make learning sign language fun!
By the end of the semester, students will be able to identify and produce the signs for many different words, hold a simple conversation in American Sign Language, and understand a basic history of ASL as well as Deaf culture.
Each week homework will be assigned to enrich the learning experience. Assignments will include worksheets to be turned in, videos to watch, fun projects, and practice of signs learned.
NOTE:
Registration deadline is March 15, 2021.
There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class.
