FIELD LAB SCHEDULE:
Science of Kayaking – Wednesday, August 11
On shore, kids learn and practice the science that allows boats to float as we investigate buoyancy, displacement, density, hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. We then apply these concepts as we take a kayak tour to demonstrate how forces are used to move the kayak.

Litter Data Collection – Wednesday, August 18
Students learn how scientists and volunteers categorize and collect data on litter found in and around bodies of water, then work together to perform a strategic survey to collect lake trash data while kayaking.

Limnology – Wednesday, August 25
Kids learn how to collect water samples and environmental data to study the chemistry and biology as the kayak the shoreline of Lake Allatoona. On shore, we conduct water chemistry tests and investigate aquatic plants that inhabit shallow benthic habitats.

Aquatic Microorganisms – Wednesday, September 1
We collect water and sediment samples as we kayak the shoreline and return to shore to investigate and document the microorganisms collected. Kids learn the proper use of a field microscope and quantify the biodiversity of the aquatic environment.

Lake Ecology – Wednesday, September 8
On shore, we discuss the diversity of vertebrates and invertebrates that inhabit lakeshore environments and how they interact with each other and their environment. While kayaking, we collect data on the species we observe, including their behavior and where they were found. We also learn and practice navigation skills using a compass.
