Homeschool: PATTERNS, PUZZLES AND MATH – Science of Math

PATTERNS, PUZZLES AND MATH
Wednesdays, October 6-December 15 (no class Nov 24; 10 weeks)
9:30am-10:45am
Ages 6-8

Elementary math concepts are taught and reinforced through puzzles, games, and fun hands-on learning activities throughout this course. Students work with numbers to study quantity, structure, space, symmetry, change, and how to seek and use patterns to formulate new conclusions. All lab costs are included in registration fee.

LAB SCHEDULE:
Tangram Challenge – Wednesday, October 6
In this math lab, students use symmetry and pattern recognition to create puzzles and explain relationships of shapes.

Geometry Origami – Wednesday, October 13
Students use math and fine motor skills in this lab to understand how 3-dimensional objects are created with paper.

Science of Math – Wednesday, October 20
This week, we investigate patterns in numbers, and how numbers are used to as scientific data, including measuring speed, distance, volume and mass.

Math Detectives – Wednesday, October 27
Students work together as a detective team to find number clues, use math and logic to solve mysteries and puzzles, and figure out lock combinations to escape the room!

Theories and Riddles – Wednesday, November 3

In this math lab, students solve numerical riddles and explore math theories as they work with logic and number patterns to challenge their brains.

LEGO® Math – Wednesday, November 10

This class is all about hands-on math using LEGO®. From addition and subtraction, to fractions and geometry, using LEGO® bricks is a fun way to reinforce elementary math concepts.

Fibonacci Sequence – Wednesday, November 17

We learn about the Fibonacci Sequence, and explore spirals in nature and art to determine if they fit this numerical pattern.

Mathematics Obstacle Course – Wednesday, December 1
This week we solve math problems to race through a Mathematics Obstacle Course.

Building with Math (two weeks)– Wednesday, December 8 and 15
In these labs, students work on their measuring skills as they design and build a project that requires accurate measurements.
