Homeschool: SCIENCE OF STORIES – Pete the Cat

SCIENCE OF STORIES
Thursdays, September 16-December 16 (no class October 14, November 25; 12 weeks)
12:30pm-1:45pm    
Ages 6-8

Students learn scientific and engineering principles, conduct experiments and design and build as engineers as they test the science related to different storytime favorites, including Where the Wild Things Are, The Lorax, and Pete the Cat. Each week we conduct a hands-on activity or experiment to experience fiction in a real way. All lab costs are included in registration fee.

LAB SCHEDULE:
Where the Wild Things Are – Thursday, September 16
Today, we take a look at animal adaptations and how animals use their various traits for survival.

How to Catch a Star – Thursday, September 23
We study what makes a star and learn about the different stars and constellations around us and how we can identify them.

The Snowy Day – Thursday, September 30
Students become more familiar with the water cycle and how different weather patterns form.

Three Little Pigs – Thursday, October 7
This week, we work through structural engineering challenges to see what makes a sturdy building.

Rainbow Fish – Thursday, October 21
We study how light and how rainbows are made and discuss how colors mix to form different colors.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie – Thursday, October 28
Students learn about cause and effect, and learn how to engineer a chain reaction machine.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar – Thursday, November 4
In lab today, we discuss bugs and insects, and how we can classify and identify them.

The Lorax – Thursday, November 11
Students study explore the process of photosynthesis, and learn how plants grow.

Go Dog Go – Thursday, November 18
We investigate different ways to move, and discuss physical aspects of how motion affects objects.

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble – Thursday, December 2
Today, we explore characteristics of different rocks and minerals as we learn how to find and classify them.

Pete the Cat – Thursday, December 9
This week, we learn about rhythm and music as we learn how to engineer our own instruments.

Hansel and Gretel – Thursday, December 16
Students learn about chemistry as we investigate chemical and physical changes, and conduct a candy chromatography experiment.
