
American Literature & Argumentation: 12th Grade Live Online Homeschool Class

Their words linger in our minds forever.
Join me in this 12th grade/advanced 11th grade level English course, designed to improve the written, verbal, and evaluative skills of the student. This course introduces students to authors mostly from America and includes in-depth analysis of literature and skill development in advanced grammar, rhetoric and ideologies.
Writers students will encounter include:
• From Puritan era: Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, Jonathan Edwards among others• From Revolutionary era: John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin among others• From Romantic era: Nathaniel Hawthorne Scarlet Letter• From Realist/Naturalist era: Mark Twain Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jack London short story “A Piece of Steak”• From Modernist era: F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby and Arthur Miller Death of a Salesman
As students encounter these authors, scriptural roots of American thought and writing will be uncovered and used to examine the American eras.
Students will develop more persuasive argumentation and a depth of logical inquiry, along with a greater sense of style as they gain experience using Toulmin’s Claim/Evidence/Warrant essay format.
Weekly SAT vocabulary prep for precision and words in context questions is also a focus of this course.
Assessments will include essays, quizzes, oral exams, peer interaction and presentations.
This is a 1 credit high school level course for advanced students
A minimum of 1.5 hours per day will be required to complete assignments for this course.
