Introduction to Graphic Design

Graphic design is more than throwing together clip art and different fonts and colors. It is creative problem solving through design thinking. Graphic designers work to take the confines of societal acceptability and make it a beautiful part of our every day visual landscape with the intention of influencing individual and group behavior, political policy, and even society.

PLEASE NOTE: We will not use any special programs. This class is not digital design, but rather an elemental design course that starts at the very basics of creative thinking, basic drawing, and compositional design.

In this class, we will discuss the very basics of graphic design, how it is similar to traditional art and how it differs. We will learn what a graphic designer does and where graphic designers work. We will talk about the planning process of design including thumbnails, roughs, and comps. We will talk about the basic elements of design and each week we will use one of the basic elements of design to create (by hand) an abstract comprehensive design.

Students will move through a multi-step design process by using the visual elements of design to create a meaningful 2D design with abstract images. Homework will include creating multiple thumbnail drawings, roughs, and a final composition.

Schedule of coursework:
– Monday: Lecture video will be released Mondays at 8 a.m. (EST). The weekly assignments are discussed in great detail in the lecture video.
– Wednesday: Weekly assignment #1 (thumbnails) is due to be posted in the Outschool classroom. Every student and I will participate in a group discussion and critique of each of the thumbnails. Each student will use the critique of their work to select the 3 most successful thumbnails to continue on to the weekly assignment #2.
– Friday: Weekly assignment #2 (roughs) is due to be posted in the Outschool Classroom. Every student and I will participate in a group discussion and critique of each of the roughs. Each student will use the critique of their work to select the 1 most successful rough to continue on to the weekly assignment #3.
– Sunday: Weekly assignment #3 (final comp) is due to be posted in the Outschool Classroom. Every student and I will participate in a group discussion and critique of each of the final composition. We will discuss the overall success or failure of the comp fulfilling the assignment.

THIS CLASS IS PRE-RECORDED AND FOCUSES ON CLASSROOM INTERACTIONS. THERE ARE NO LIVE MEETINGS. TO FACILITATE AN ENGAGING CLASS EXPERIENCE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE WITHIN THE CLASSROOM.
