Who should apply?
This course uses art to introduce 4th–6th graders to basic technology and computer skills. No prerequisite for this class is required except for a basic understanding of how to operate a computer and Zoom. Students will be asked to toggle back and forth between Zoom and MS PowerPoint.
Technology Requirements:
- MS PowerPoint
- High speed, broadband Internet
- webcam, headset, and microphone
Evaluation and Feedback
At the conclusion of every online class, students are asked to share their project during a “show-and-tell” time. Through this, the teacher is able to assess student progress and understanding of the cumulative subject matter. In addition, each class opens with an informal review of previously introduced material. Students are quizzed using a “seek-and-find” type method, through a review game such as Tic-Tac-Toe, or through oral questioning. By the end of the semester, students have created a digital art portfolio that showcases skills acquired.
Communication
Communication is an essential component of any educational endeavor. With that in mind, I encourage all of my students to contact me whenever they need assistance with an assignment, and I make it a priority to promptly respond to student inquiries. I also send a weekly “wrap-up” email outlining the learning objectives we accomplished in class as well as reminders about upcoming assignments. Parental inquiries are also welcomed and encouraged as parental involvement is essential to student success. To best serve parents, I have established “office hours” on Friday mornings from 9:00–11:00 AM (ET) for responding to emails and phone calls. I consider it a great privilege to be able to walk alongside parents and assist them in educating their children.
